Photo: Bear's Den Bear's DenNeilson Rd., New Salem, MA Short trail to hemlock-rimmed gorge with waterfalls under 75-foot granite cliffs. Description:The Bear’s Den is a small, six-acre parcel abutting land owned by the state to protect the Quabbin Reservoir. The two short, moderately difficult trails, however-one leading to a gorge, one to the area beneath the falls-offer delightful rewards. The 75-foot falls are created by the Middle Branch of the Swift River as it crashes through granite cliffs. King Philip met here with other Nipmuck chieftains during the 17th century, and a mill met settlers’ needs in later centuries. Directions:From Rte. 2, take Exit 16 (Rte. 202) and go south 2.3 miles. Turn right on Elm St. and go 0.7 mi. Turn left on Neilson Rd. and go 0.5 mi. to pullout and trailhead on right. Contact:
